The first step to shopping for a new wardrobe is to empty out the old to make room for the new. The key is to throw out any clothing that is no longer worn or throw a clothes party for friends.
At a clothes party, the host gathers used clothing which is still in good shape that they don’t wear anymore. Friends then come over to the hosts’ house to buy potentially good clothes.
With the money that the host receives, they can go purchase new clothes.
Throw away clothes if it has been hanging in the closet for more than one year, it is too small, out of style or the price tag has been on it for over six months.
After cleaning out the closet and donating clothes, then the shopper needs to go through the remaining clothes to see if there are any missing clothes. For example, if there was a skirt that a person loves, but there is no shirt in the closet that matches the skirt then the shopper needs to make a list of potential articles of clothing to buy.
When buying clothes keep in mind that everything that is bought needs to go with other pieces of clothing. This creates more clothing options and versatility of favorite separates.
“Buy what looks good on you, not what is just in fashion,” Grace Bonnette said.
Bonnette is the owner of Accents by Grace in downtown Inverness.
To freshen the wardrobe, get pants or sleeves hemmed, mend rips or tears, replace buttons, and shine old jewelry. By personally hemming clothes the shopper can save more money.
“Buy what your mom would approve of and be individual,” Andrea Perry said.
Perry is the owner of Ritzy Rags and Glitzy Jewels, Etc in downtown Inverness.
A tip for buying pants, jackets and skirts is to buy neutrals (black, white, gray, tan, brown and navy blue). Solid colored shirts are easier to make an outfit with if the person is in a rush.
“I sell formal dresses, bridal gowns and tuxedos,” said Bonnette. “I try to keep my prices under $400 because I think it is ridiculous to spend anymore on a dress you’re only going to wear once.”
One way to spice up an outfit is to add jewelry. A different colored belt or a bold piece of jewelry will make a simple outfit appear more interesting.
“Popular items that we sell are jewelry and purses,” Perry said.

Long, straight hair is in style for boys.
There are ways to help clothing last longer. Such as cutting out tags instead of ripping them out, wash clothes less often (don’t wear the same shirt two times a week), zip up zippers before washing, wash clothes in cold water, dry clothes on low, sew up holes and save extra buttons.
By replacing buttons, this gives a new pop of color to an old piece of clothing. Buttons may be expensive but if there is a thrift store buy cheap clothing with cool buttons, then cut off the buttons to use on clothes in the closet.
Dye old clothes that have small stains on them. This adds the appearance of new clothing to the wardrobe when it is actually just a different color.
If the outfit piece that is in consideration is cheap, most likely the material is not made of the best quality fabric. This means that the shopper will end up buying a replacement piece later on.
Classic pieces that should be in every woman’s closet are a black dress, trench coat, classic dress pants, versatile skirt, fitted blazer, classic white dress shirt, day dress, cashmere sweater, fitted jeans and a trend item.
The spring fashions for women are skinny jeans, pleated skirts, colorful flats, cropped cardigans, purses with many zippers and pockets, sundresses and colorful shorts. The spring fashions for men are boot cut or skinny jeans, horizontal striped polo shirts, plain t-shirts, sports shirts, jerseys and Converse shoes.
