Gym classes remain popular for filler, fitness

Gym classes are very popular at Citrus High.

For some students it is just a ‘filler class’ because there is no room in their schedules for any other classes.

Some students take gym for a quarter so they can grade forgive an academic class.

However, many students have a particular purpose for signing up for gym, and have real passion for it.

“I signed up for gym because I wanted to be more physically active in school,” said senior Brandon Kee.

Kee takes the Physical Education class (PE) with Coach Taylor.

“We run laps, stretch and either play basketball or hardball on a regular basis,” said Kee.

PE is just one of the many different gym classes available at Citrus High, along with Weightlifting, Volleyball, Team Sports, and Personal Fitness, etc.

“I am in Personal Fitness,” said freshman Lacie Swan.

Personal Fitness is a class that focuses on diet, health, and exercise.

“I like to do the stadium runs,” said Swan. “It burns a lot of calories.”

Personal Fitness is only a nine week class. Along with Personal Fitness, students are required to take Health.

“I like Personal Fitness better than Health class because we get to do more stuff outside,” freshman Austin Hughes said.

Health explains the dangers of drugs, and alcohal. It also is a class meant to tteach students about sexually transmitted diseases, and how to properly protect yourself from the dangerous decisions that people often make, like drinking and driving.

“I really like Health class because we get to do a lot of projects,” freshman Cody Duncan said. “It is really fun.”

Swan wanted to take personal fitness to learn more about her body and to get some exercise.

“I think all students should be required to take some sort of gym class,” said Swan. “It will teach them about their body and maybe help the obesity problem amoung young people in America.”

No matter what the reasoning, gym classes are always full of students. Some who were stuck in the class, but most really love it.
