Blog: Miss America Pageant

Written by: Kaitlynn Ramsay Blog: Miss America Pageant thumbnail

Jan. 31 the Miss America pageant was held at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. Miss Virgina, Caressa Cameron, was crowned as the new Miss America 2010. While people believe that pageants are shallow and a poor role model for young girls, Miss America is a long standing tradition that can have a positive affect on the lives of others.

With shows like Tots in Tiaras many people get the sense that Miss America and other pageant ideals weigh heavy on little girls’ and their parents’ expectations of beauty and winning. While it may show some strain, Miss America has inspired thousands of young women to feel beautiful and confident no matter what race or age they are.

Miss America 2009, Katie Stam, preformed major civil duties whilst holding the title of Miss America: visiting soldiers across seas, helping handicapped children and being a public figure for the United States. Also, The Miss America Organization is one of the leading scholarship providers for young women, handing out over $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance.

Many athletes receive scholarships for their talent. Most people respect athletes and admire their ability to preform physical duties. Band, journalism and even chorus students also receive scholarships for their abilities to play instruments, sing and write. The Miss America Organization gives another scholarship opportunity that should be respected. Women are trying to use their talents the same way a recruited athlete does to get into college.

The Miss America competition is a platform forwomen to get scholarship aid and be a role model for young children. In this age women in some countries are not considered equal to men, the Miss America Organization gives women an opportunity to show that women can be strong and independent with grace and femininity.

In all, the Miss America competition is a positive aspect on women and young girls. It provides scholarship opportunities, gives women a women to be an inspiration and lets women help people. Miss America Pageant should be a respected organization that holds a long tradition of beauty and confidence.
