Media Center aids freshmen on campus

At the beginning of every semester media specialist, Mrs. Rybak, does an orientation for all freshmen English classes. She gives the students a short presentation and hands out  a scavenger hunt to put the student’s new skills to the test. It helps thee students feel more welcome to the media center and teaches them how to work with the resources that are provided.

Last Friday Mr. Phillipson’s English class went to the media center for the orientation. Freshmen Bridger Caldwell and Alex Dickinson were among these students.

When Dickinson first walked in he was overwhelmed by the amount of books. He thought it was going to be really boring.

“I was just excited to do something other than classwork,” Dickinson said.

Mrs. Rybak introduced herself and the rest of the media staff then but on a short video to help explain how the media center works.

“Mrs Rybak’s presentation was excellent,” Caldwell said. “The video was really interesting and funny.”

After watching the video Mrs. Rybak had prepared the students were separated into groups to begin the scavenger hunt.

“At first I thought the scavenger hunt would be kind of lame,” Dickinson said. “It ended up being really fun though.”

Caldwell also enjoyed the scavenger hunt.

“I was excited to find the materials listed on the hunt,” he said. “It was like knowing that you actually could find the answers to the questions with the resources she gave us.”

Caldwell also said the school media center is a great place to find information necessary to do school work.

“Sometimes they don’t have all of the fun books I’d like,” he said. ”But overall I like it.”
